We are building a new website. So PLEASE excuse the mismatched photos and incomplete descriptions. You will find that our inventory lists are fairly accurate, or as accurate as we can keep them during the spring rush.
We will continue to work at completing the website and in the meantime we appreciate your patience.

Old Stage Road Nursery (OSRN) is a 20 acre family farm and wholesale container nursery located at 7181 Old Stage Road, Angier, NC. It is owned and operated by Robert Broadwell, Jr.. The nursery grows a wide variety of common and speciality landscape shrubs and trees for the landscaper, garden center, building contractor and home owner. 90% of our material is grown and marketed in 3 - 25 gallon pots. OSRN grows a few 1 gallon herbs and perennials and a few 45 gallon and larger specimens trees.
Old Stage Road Nursery is a family farm. The 20 acre nursery is part of a tract of land that has been farmed by the Broadwell family for more than 100 years. The Broadwell family has been involved in many aspects of the agricultural business, including both conventional farm crops as well as speciality nursery crops.
Read this website and become familiar with it. Become familiar with our business operation and what we do and do not offer. Review our plant availability and follow the links that will describe each plant in detail. These links will often take you directly to university or department of agriculture websites and sometimes directly to the creator or hybridizer of these plants. There is no better source of information for you.
We are a farm, a nursery, which is very different than a retail environment. We only have a couple employees and they are responsible for the care of nearly 500,000 plants. They also have to assist customers by asking basic questions as well as helping them load their vehicles and trucks. We do NOT provide a detailed “sales person” experience. We do NOT have the time and it is NOT our business model. Our employees and management are all nursery professionals with decades of practical plant knowledge and experience. But again, all of that experience and knowledge is focused on created a nursery / growing environment, not a retail environment. Our focus is to grow a quality plant at a fair price so that you, the end customer can benefit.
We have several employees that work for us that will sometimes haul / deliver plants to customers after work hours or on weekends.
If you need trucking, we can give you the phone number of several local individuals and companies that do haul nursery stock and you can make arrangements with them. You can also send a truck to our nursery and we will load it for you.
Again, as above, we have several employees that work for us that will sometimes install plants for customers after work hours or on weekends. You must make the arrangements directly with them.
We have pickup trucks available for customer use so that they can drive around our nursery picking up their plants.
As far as truck usage, BE CONSIDERATE. Please know which plants that you want and approximately where they are on the nursery before you take one of our trucks. You would think that we would not have to make the next point, but every year, multiple times a year, someone will take one of our trucks and have it tied up for hours while the “just look around”. This is inconsiderate and unacceptable.
All of our roads / drives circle except one. We do have one dead end and it is a tough one if you get stuck in there.
Our nursery is walkable and on a nice spring day, it is very pleasant experience. In the spring, when many plants are in bloom it is absolutely gorgeous. There are several areas by our large irrigation pond that are as peaceful and beautiful as it gets.
Be patient with us and be patient with other customers!
A lot of people know about our nursery operation and that we really do have quality plants at very fair prices. We become a destination, especially in the spring. For two (2) months in the spring and many Saturdays all year can be crazy - just like any garden center. There are times that we have 100’s of people on our property at the same time, all looking at or buying plants. It can be overwhelming.
*** - And the answer is not more employees that do not know anything. Our growing nursery is a complex business, spread over 20 acres with 100’s of thousands of plants in many different stages of growth. New employees to help handle the spring rush are no help at all. They actually just become another thing to “manage”.
*** - Returned checks for Insufficient Funds will be charged a $35.00 Processing Fee.
It would be easy with strong cell phone reception to process credit cards over a cell phone or similar hand held device. However, cell phone signal strength is so weak in our area that we cannot process secure transactions.
So, we are in the process of putting in a “system” that will allow us to process transactions not only in the office but outside the office “on the sales yard” as customers checkout.
Please be patient and understanding during this transition. The office will be fine once we get internet installed, but the process to be able to process credit and debit cards outside “on the lot” may take time. We will have to boost our Wi-Fi signal so that it will have enough signal strength to process secure transactions several hundred feet from the office. There will probably be a trial and error period of what will work and what will not. Again, when we have this process and new system fully in place, we will update this website.
This is absolute. Whether you are buying 1 plant or 101 plants, the price is the same. Don’t ask. Don’t bargain. Just don’t! You are already buying “farm” price and tax free!
We are a farm. We are a “growing” entity. Therefore, you will see plants in all stages of growth and development. Please do not go pick out a small plant and ask for a discount. This is what we do, grow small plants into larger plants. So Don’t ask. Don’t bargain. Just don’t!
Nursery stock (plants) are considered “perishable” goods. They have a very short “shelf life” if not cared for properly. At our nursery, we monitor water intake / soil moisture every day, we fertilize, we spray for insects and diseases and we fight the weeds continually. We do this as it is the very definition of a nursery, a farm.
We will warranty our plants to be healthy and viable at the time of sale. We can not and do not provide any warranty beyond the sale. Once you take “our baby” from our nursery, you assume all responsibility for its care. We can not and will not be responsible for how you care for the “baby”. Otherwise, the baby would still be in our care, being watered and fertilized properly and probably, 99.99% would still be alive. This is your responsibility, not ours, once you take our plants from our care.
Old Stage Road Nursery has always had a reputation of growing quality nursery stock at a fair price, sometimes even at a “cheap” price. We are consistently cheaper than the traditional big box stores when comparing comparable size and quality of plant material, as it should be. You are buying directly from the grower, right at the farm, to your advantage.
Every business in this country is currently facing a challenging business environment. Good labor is hard to come by, supply chains are facing unprecedented uncertainty and costs are rapidly changing, sometimes daily. The agricultural industry severely feels this pain. All of our pots and tags are made of petroleum products, as are most of our chemicals and fertilizers. Most of the raw materials that makeup traditional agriculture fertilizers are sourced from outside the United States. As mentioned earlier, labor is hard to find and it is expensive when you can find it.
Given all of these pressures on our business, we must constantly monitor and evaluate our input costs and our final sale costs in order to remain a viable business. When we change a price, it is because we have too, not because we want too! However, Old Stage Road Nursery still remains dedicated to growing a quality plant at a fair price.
